3 tips for agricultural producers on the sowing season in 2023

With a land bank almost a third less, NIBULON starts a new season. To a certain extent, the situation is similar with the state of accessibility to the use of agricultural land in Ukraine. If before the outbreak of hostilities, we cultivated 76.5 thousand hectares in 20 farms, this year only 51.0 thousand hectares in 13 branches. Another 5.5 thousand hectares are located in the Shihurivska district of Mykolaiv region and need to be surveyed and demined, and about 20 thousand hectares are in the zone of military clashes or are unattainable for us due to the occupation. The impact of hostilities on agricultural production in the southern region of Ukraine is difficult to overestimate. Demining and collection of unused ammunition in the fields of our Prybuzhanivska branch in Mykolaiv region, which last year got into the combat zone for only 4-5 days, lasted more than a month. Had to go around all the fields, look closely, take out the ammunition with which they were littered in order to carry out sowing. It is hard to even imagine what to expect from the situation in the fields of Snihurivska branch, to which we do not have access yet, because hostilities were continued on the territory of the community for more than 220 days. However, demining is not the only problem for farmers. Although the logistics situation has improved significantly compared to the last year, producers are suffering from deteriorating financing. A year ago, there were no supplies of seeds, protective equipment and fertilizers, there were problems with fuel, which forced us to set aside part of the technological operations and, of course, affected the final result. However, there were experience, ingenuity and own means that helped to carry out sowing. However, all these restrictions, starting from the lack of human resources and ending with supply disruptions, did not contribute to obtaining high results, which led to a drop-in revenue and further provoked a chain reaction, gradually worsening the financial condition of agricultural producers. In such conditions, to survive and ensure productivity, in my opinion, three things will help agricultural producers:1. Demining as a ServiceDo not try to demine your own land on your own. We have many examples in neighboring communities and villages, when farmers, at their own risk, entered the fields without a preliminary survey. They hoped to visually detect the threat and bypass it already during the operation of agricultural machinery, but have lost their lives. We applied to charitable foundations, the Ministry of Emergency Situations, and the police about demining – we involved all available channels. In addition, we create our own division and obtain certification for surveying and demining fields. So, I hope that soon we will be able to help our neighbors with demining in the format of a professional service.2. Cost controlIn the current season, the most important thing that farmers need to pay attention to is the economics of production. Keep track of the predicted value of agricultural crops. Calculate the cost of your own crop. Optimize costs as much as possible. There is a threat that some crops can be damaged in case of adverse weather conditions. According to our data, this is more true for cereals, but oilseeds can also be at risk.3. Consider moisture supply dataOur analysis shows that this year the situation with moisture supply in the southern and central parts of Ukraine is worse than in the previous year. Studies show that here moisture reserves do not exceed 100-120 mm in a meter layer of soil, and precipitationі in January – March is less than the average annual indicators of recent years. Therefore, you should approach the selection of culture in a detailed and careful manner. Moisture-loving ones may not form such a crop, which farmers are counting on. Especially in the zone of Kirovohrad, Cherkasy, perhaps even the Kyiv region. We at NIBULON are not used to giving up: we continue to fight for the harvest, our people and Ukraine. Be careful, conscious and succeed!
