On the occasion of the International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action, we showcase the preparatory work for obtaining certification in waterway demining.

In 2023, recognizing Ukraine’s urgent need to clear approximately 15,000 square kilometers of water areas, NIBULON initiated the development of Ukraine’s first specialized vessel for demining inland waterways. This vessel was built at NIBULON’s shipyard during wartime.
The company is currently undergoing certification for three key mine action processes. It is expanding its efforts to:
- Conduct waterway demining
- Neutralize explosive remnants of war
- Inform the population about the risks associated with mines and explosive objects.
According to the company’s experts, Ukraine requires at least 15 vessels to clear inland waterways effectively and restore access to Ukrainian ports. This will also enable continuous monitoring of water areas for potential explosive contamination.
With its experience, production capabilities, and specialized personnel, NIBULON is ready to launch the serial production of the DSNS25 project vessels to support waterway demining, potentially forming the foundation of a national program for clearing Ukraine’s navigable waters.
“Ukraine must focus on maintaining and strengthening its status as a reliable global partner in food security. Safe civilian navigation is a matter of national security and economic growth. Waterway demining and the reopening of the port of Mykolaiv, including the offshore anchorage near Trutaiev Bank, will have a positive impact on grain and oilseed transportation. For example, unblocking the port of Mykolaiv will reduce logistics costs by $4 per ton of agricultural products grown in frontline regions and on the left bank of the Dnipro River. Additionally, restoring the E-40 inland waterway (Southern Bug and Dnipro rivers) for cargo transportation will result in cost savings of $3 per ton compared to alternative routes (road/rail/sea through other ports),” noted Mykhailo Rizak, Director of Government Relations at NIBULON.
NIBULON expresses its sincere gratitude to the Government of Germany and the DEG Impulse program for supporting the demining of agricultural lands. The company also hopes for further donor support to help develop Ukraine’s capabilities in demining and sustainable monitoring of safe navigation in international waterways.
