Laboratory Operates According to NIBULON’s Standard

All NIBULON’s newly-built facilities are highly appreciated by the state ecological expertise. The close relationship among production, transportation, agricultural commodity storage and the necessity to use and reproduce efficiently natural resources provides for the implementation of nature-conservative measures at the company, consisting of modern environmentally friendly technologies and environmental control system.
NIBULON’s chemical-technological laboratory is an important component in this chain. The laboratory is engaged in monitoring the environment within the company’s activities and controlling products in terms of consumption safety. This division with 5 specialists researches underground, fresh, sewage and surface water, atmospheric air and soils; tests oil products for compliance with the standards established, etc. The company pays particular attention to the sausage product quality produced at the meat-processing workshop of “Bystryts’ka” branch in Zhytomyr region, according to the standards approved. In addition to professional training, the laboratory specialists closely cooperate with the environmental department, production department and NIBULON’s shipping company in order to monitor efficiently.
Paying more attention to water environment
The country and NIBULON’s management pay more attention to drinking water safety. If from 2011 till 2013 there were performed 135, 209 and 182 tests respectively, in 2014 this figure increased up to 288 ones. Moreover, the total number of indices measured in underground drinking water increased (2007 – 19 indices, 2010 – 22 indices and in 2014 – 28 ones).
It is not just statistics. Measurements, performed on the basis of sample analysis, enabled the company to improve drinking water quality. The tests performed by the specialists in the chemical-technological laboratory showed that water from 35 wells and from 4 city water supply systems does not meet the standards according to 1-2 indices and even more. In order to solve the problem, the company installed 14 water treatment units at the facilities with the worst water quality; such equipment was installed in 4 water supply systems. As a result, the treatment efficiency comprised 95-99% by all indices.
Particular attention should be paid to the drinking water quality on board NIBULON’s vessels in order to guarantee health safety of the shipping company’s employees. Last year the specialists took 34 samples from fresh water tanks and water supply systems on aboard the tugs. As a result, the company washed and disinfected tanks onboard some vessels, and Ochakivvodokanal utility company, a water supplier, had a claim to water quality.
The reliability principle is applied when controlling water quality on newly-built vessels. For example, the specialists of the chemical-technical laboratory prepared disinfectant solutions and controlled tank readiness when NIBULON-6 was put into operation, and then the Sanitary and Epidemiological Service performed control tests and issued the Maritime Sanitary Navigation  Certificate (please note that the company saved its money).
NIBULON having a developed network of facilities in many regions of Ukraine treats rain wastewater and domestic water. Based on the measurement findings (the company took 278 samples in 2014), NIBULON measures the efficiency of treatment units, plans and conducts appropriate measures. Return water is treated by treatment facilities at the river terminals before discharge.
The laboratory specialists also research detergents in order to reduce phosphate content. They tested 6 types of washers produced by different companies. As a result, NIBULON’s branches must use phosphate free detergents produced in Ukraine. Findings made by NIBULON’s chemical-technological laboratory are a basis to develop NIBULON’s environmental programs.
Protecting atmospheric air from pollution
While creating infrastructure, building new facilities, NIBULON uses modern technologies to protect the environment as well as atmospheric air, namely closed technology to transport grain cargoes, aspiration systems of polluted air, modern dust-trapping equipment, landscaping. The company aims to improve cargo transportation along eco-friendly waterways.
The chemical-technological laboratory is an important component in the company’s policy.  It controls how emission permits are executed as well as the compliance with the emission standards established. Collaborating with NIBULON’s environmental department, the laboratory specialists controlled 56 aspiration systems, measured dust air mixture, total, dynamic and statistical pressures, speed and consumption of air in 2014. In case of deviation, the company took measures – cleaned up air pipes and dust-trapping equipment, improved sealing, etc.
In addition, according to the measurements performed by the chemical-technological laboratory, the company tested bag filters made of domestic material and chose the Ukrainian material to produce filters that allowed NIBULON to maintain treatment efficiency at the level of foreign filters. The noise-protective and dust-protective measures were performed at “Smotrych”, “Novoodes’ka”, “Khmil’nyk” branches and “AK Vradiyivs’kyy” Ltd.
Protecting soil
“The earth is our wealth” is the motto of the production and technological laboratory. Soil research according to fertility indices and constant monitoring of the cultivated areas enable the company to renew and to balance nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium content in soil. The chemical-technological laboratory send measurement results to NIBULON’s production department, and its specialists calculate the required number of mineral fertilizers to be purchased.
In 2014, NIBULON’s laboratory researched 148 samples in order to research soil condition.
In case if a moratorium on agricultural land sales is called off, the laboratory measurement results will be fundamental when explicating responsibility for soil fertility decline.
Testing oil products
The chemical-technological laboratory collaborates with NIBULON’s shipping company and road transport service in order to research oil products (motor oil, diesel fuel). In 2014, the laboratory researched 54 samples.
It is very important to analyze oil in time in order to avoid hazard effects having a bad influence both on engine operation and the environment (sediment, pollution, clogging of oil pipeline and filters). The laboratory employees efficiently control this process.
Improving sausage product quality
Every year “Bystryts’ki Kovbasy” trade mark is becoming more and more renowned. The chemical-technological laboratory is also engaged in producing sausage products in Bystryk village (Ruzhynka district in Zhytomyr region). In October 2014, the laboratory completed the certification of sausage products for compliance with normative requirements. Since then till January 2015, the laboratory analyzed 33 samples. All the indices meet DSTU requirements.
NIBULON uses modern and European approaches to solve the tasks. NIBULON’s standard is to respect nature and to produce only qualitative products. In addition, taking into consideration the necessity to preserve the environment, NIBULON’s chemical-technological laboratory offers monitoring services to other companies and organizations. It is NIBULON’s standard that guarantees success in future.
