On December 19, 2013, Director of Department of National Projects of Ukraine Yuriy Gusev informed about it.
“Over the last 20 years the number of cargo carriage along the Dnipro and the Southern Bug River has decreased in 10 times. If in 1991 the figure was 60.1 million tons per year, then in 2010 – only 6.6 million tons; such a tendency is observed in passenger transportation”, mentioned Yuriy Gusev. “The project ‘River Infrastructure’ will help to increase the volume of cargo transportation of grain crops by water transport in Ukraine, to revive navigation along the Dnipro River; and also the ways of international connection from Belarus to the Black Sea will be opened to investors.
“Dangerous (limiting) parts in the Dniprovsk and Dniprodzerzhynsk Reservoirs and also insufficient carrying capacity of navigation pass of the Southern Bug River are among the main reasons that restrain cargo and passenger navigation and decrease cargo transportation volume”, said Andriy Vasylev, deputy general director on legal and economic issues of NIBULON. “During the Soviet period this problem could not be removed because of absence of the required equipment”.
“At present dredging, namely rock crushing on the limiting parts of the Dnipro and the Southern Bug Rivers, is possible thanks to modern and powerful machinery”, mentioned Andriy Vasylev. “River bottom deepening will contribute to cargo turnover increase among the southern sea ports and river ports located in the Dniprodzerzhynsk, Kremenchuk and Kaniv Reservoirs that will contribute to increase of working places and average wage of employees”.
Within NIBULON’s investment project there have been constructed and put into operation 7 river transshipment terminals in Kyiv, Cherkasy, Poltava, Zaporizhzhya, Kherson and Mykolayiv regions. Own cargo fleet numbers 36 floating units with the total deadweight of 131.08 thousand tons. It is planned to perform dredging on the limiting parts of the Dnipro River till the end of 2015.
